SEO trends in 2023 are of great interest to many people as 2022 is a turbulent year for Google as it continuously releases long-term algorithm updates, causing all SEO players to lose ground to a greater or lesser extent.

To identify SEO trends in 2023, we need to look back and evaluate the algorithms that Google has launched in 2022. To have an objective view, as well as make predictions for SEO in the upcoming year 2023, let’s look back at the updates from the beginning of 2022 as follows.

March 2022 product reviews update  March 2022 product reviews update

This update, announced on March 23, has officially completed its rollout over a period of 19 days.

Google’s product review update is aimed at promoting review content above and beyond the many templated pieces of information you see on the web. Google says it will boost these types of product reviews in its search results rankings.

Google doesn’t directly penalize lower-quality product reviews that have “thin content that simply summarizes a bunch of products.”

However, if you provide such content and find your rankings are downgraded because other content is ranking higher than yours, then it will definitely feel like a penalty.

Technically, according to Google, this is not a penalty for your content, Google just rewards sites with deeper review content with higher rankings than you.

Technically, this update only affects product review content and not other types of content.

May 2022 core update  Google’s May 2022 broad core update

Google’s May 2022 Broad Core Update was released on May 25, 2022, and the rollout was completed on June 9, 2022 (taking about 15 days to fully roll out).

It was a big algorithm update with a lot of volatility for many sites during the initial rollout. But that was just the beginning, as we saw some major shakeups during the rollout (with some sites reversing course based on those adjustments). I’ll cover more about shakeups later in this post.

Beyond that, I really felt like something was  different  with this update (based on analyzing sites getting rewards, sites resurrecting from the dead, shakeups happening, intent changes happening, etc.) It was one of the biggest updates I’ve seen in a long time.

The problem is that we’ll never know what Google changed. That’s the reality of where we are with broad core updates, and it’s incredibly important to understand that. I’ll cover more about that later in my post as well.

Broad Core Update Case Studies:

When it comes to broad core updates, I find the most effective way to demonstrate what happened is to provide examples of sites I’ve worked on. This is because I have in-depth knowledge of each site, their history, the overall niche, I know what came up in the audit, the work that was done, how long ago those changes were made, etc.

So I’ll cover five micro case studies  that again  highlight the complexity of broad core updates. I’ll also cover some other important changes that coincide with the May 2022 broad core update.

In other words, And I want to thank my clients for allowing me to cover these cases. I think these cases can help other site owners understand more about how broad core updates work, how sites might be affected, etc.

July 2022 product reviews update –  Google’s fourth product review update

Google Product Review Update.  Google’s product review update is intended to promote review content above and beyond the many templated pieces of information you see on the web. Google says it will boost these types of product reviews in its search results rankings.

Google doesn’t directly penalize lower-quality product reviews that are “thin content that simply summarizes a bunch of products.” However, if you provide such content and find your rankings are downgraded because other content is outranking yours, it will definitely feel like a penalty.

Technically, according to Google, this is not a penalty for your content, Google just rewards sites with deeper review content with higher rankings than you.

Google recommends that your product reviews cover these areas and answer these questions. Your product reviews…

  • Demonstrate product expertise when appropriate?
  • Show what the product looks like physically or how to use the product, with unique content beyond what the manufacturer provides?
  • Provide quantitative measurements of how a product measures up in different performance categories?
  • Explain what makes a product different from its competitors?
  • Include comparable products to review or telegram database users library explain which product might be best for certain uses or circumstances?
  • Discuss the benefits and drawbacks of a particular product, based on research about it?
  • Describe how a product has evolved from previous models or releases to provide improvements, solve problems, or help users make purchasing decisions?
Identify the key decision-making factors for the product category and how the product performs in those areas? For example, an automotive evaluation might identify fuel economy, safety, and handling as key decision-making factors and evaluate performance in those areas.
In other words, describe the key choices in product design and their impact on the user beyond what the manufacturer says?
Provide evidence such as images, audio, or other links of your own experience with the product to support your expertise and reinforce the authenticity of your review.
  • Include links to multiple sellers to give readers the option to purchase from the seller of their choice.

Google also linked to its blog post from earlier this year called   Delivering Better Product Information to Shoppers  .

Google has added three new points of advice for this third release of the product review update:

  • In other words, Are product review updates relevant to ranked lists and comparison reviews? Yes. Product review updates apply to all forms of review content. The   best practices   we’ve shared apply as well. However, given the shorter nature of ranked lists, you may want to demonstrate expertise and reinforce authenticity in a more concise way. Citing relevant results and including original images from tests you’ve conducted with the product can be good ways to do this.
  • In other words, Are there any recommendations for reviews that recommend “best” products? If you recommend a product as the best overall or best for a particular purpose, be sure to share with your readers why you consider it the best. What makes the product different from others on the market? Why is the product particularly suitable for the proposed purpose? In other words, Be sure to include direct supporting evidence.
  • If I create reviews for multiple products, should I create a review for each product? It can be effective to write a list of high-quality, ranked related products combined with in-depth product reviews for each recommended product. If you write both, make sure there is enough useful content in the ranked list for it to stand on its own.

Not a core update.  Google has also

said in the past that product review  updates are not the same as core updates. This is a standalone update that they call a product review update. This is separate from Google’s regular core updates, the company told us.

However, Google added that the initial advice it provided for core updates, “about creating quality content for those updates is bj lists also relevant here.” In addition to that advice, Google has provided additional guidance specific to this update.
